This is a story experience game set on Cavern. We use a 270-degree circular screen to bring players an immersive visual experience. In the process, the player will play the role of a captain who survived a shipwreck, taking the helm and sailing on the sea. At the same time, he will constantly recall the memories of the shipwreck and the crew during the journey.

Concept Art

As a concept artist, I designed some illustrations of scenes in the early stages of the project to help the project with modeling and story setting.

Our story sets the protagonist Oliver - the player plays the role of a captain who survived a shipwreck. Because he lost all the crew members and was the only survivor, he always felt guilty, which caused him to have nightmares about the shipwreck and could not wake up from it.

Concept Art - Flashback Scene

While driving the ship, Oliver will recall memories with the crew. This scene takes place inside the ship. So I drew illustrations of dialogue scenes to help advance the modeling of the ship's facilities.

Card playing scene

The scene is a flashback - a flashback scene of the captain playing cards with the crew.
The scene takes place at the bar on the right side of the cabin.

Crew dialogue scene

The scene is a flashback - a flashback scene of the conversation between the captain and the smoking man.
The scene takes place on the left side of the cabin where the barrels are stacked.

Experience Flow Chart

During the player experience process, the voice of the old captain will remind the player to move toward the light, and the player needs to adjust the direction of the ship's bow toward the light by steering the ship. When the player successfully calibrates, the memory fragment will be triggered, with a total of three trigger points. At the end of the three flashbacks there will be a shipwreck and a return to the original scene, implying that this is a cycle.

UX Concept Map

In order to take advantage of the characteristics of the circular screen, we made the three memories occur on the left, middle and right sides of the screen respectively, in order to allow players to better explore the screen left and right.

Memories Illustrations

Since it is a memory setting, the memory is not a complete and silky picture. So we decided to use keyframe illustrations to show the dialogue between the crew and the player.

Flashback of the smoking man

The crew members who were about to go home to get married shared their expectations for their future married life with the captain.

Flashback of the old captain

Oliver will recall the old captain’s teachings to him during his lifetime, reminding him to always cherish the ship and travel with it.

"Man and ship are one,

always moving towards the light!"

Flashback of playing cards

The captain will recall the scene where he and the crew once played cards on the ship, and the moments when everyone joked with each other.

"I'm going to marry my wife at the end of this journey!"

"Oliver, you always have the worst luck! You lost again!"

"Hahahahaha..."

3D modeling

Because the player's perspective is fixed inside the ship. So I modeled the interior of the ship based on the story’s scene settings.
